Cadbury Bournville Classic Dark Chocolate

10/31/2013

Comments

For nearly a year now World of Snacks has explored candy, chips, and cakes from all across the globe.  Our international snack blog has documented our journey.  Although our site is currently just a blog, starting in 2014 it will transaction into an online snack store that will ship all around the world.  Our initial reason to get into the snack business was to connect with snacks from England, where I spent much of my childhood.  English snacks will be the first stocked items with many more countries quickly following.  Our snack review today is of an English Snack that is manufactured in France.  Let’s get on with our review and see if it will make the cut.
Cadbury Bournville Classic Dark Chocolate
The loved Cadbury Brand produces our French/English Snack, which is a subsidiary of Mondelez International.  Cadbury is British candy company and is the second largest confectionery manufacture in the world.  Cadbury has been around for a while, well since 1824 and is the creator of many loved snacks including the Dairy Milk, one of England’s best selling candy bars.  Our snack under review is not the Dairy Milk, but it is another candy bar offered by Cadbury.  Let’s take a look at the Cadbury Bournville Classic Dark Chocolate.
Cadbury Bournville
Our shinny red wrapped candy bar with a black ink spot had us intrigued from the start.   The name and the packaging both appeared a little unusual.  First we investigated the name and discovered Bournville is actually a village in Birmingham, UK.  This is where the Cadbury family set up shop and actually named the village.   Next we investigated the wrapper by opening it and immediately chomping into our treat.  So let’s get on with the taste test!
The Cadbury Bournville Classic Dark Chocolate is a refined treat.  From the presentation to the taste this candy bar feels as if it was designed to be consumed by adults.  The dark chocolate is pleasantly sweet and does not hint to being over bitter like some other dark chocolates we have sampled in the past.  Our first urge was to pair it with a glass or red wine.  Another reviewer mentioned they’d like it crumbled over a slice of cheesecake.  All reviewers agreed this was an enjoyable English snack that seemed classier than your typical British chocolate treat.
Will World of Snacks offer the Cadbury Bournville as a part of our normal inventory when we launch our international snack store at the first of next year?  The answer is maybe.  In preparation for our launch we have already placed our orders with our English suppliers.  So far we have a mix of 16 English snacks en route and the Bournville is not currently one of them.  With that being said we are still searching for another 4 snacks from England and this treat may make the cut.  If you’d like to see this candy bar offered for sale worldwide please be sure to comment below.

German Ferrero Hanuta

10/24/2013

Comments

World of Snacks is racing across the globe in search of inventory to eventually offer for purchase in our international snack store set to launch early next year.  So far we have explored sweet and salty treats from a total of 27 different countries.  For this international snack review we find ourselves back in Germany, a country I was lucky enough to explore as teenager.
Ferrero Snack Brands
Our snack under review today is produced by an Italian confectionary company called Ferrero. This snack producer has long standing roots as a multinational company.  In fact Ferrero was the first company in Italy after World War II to become an international group.  Today the company is still family owned and produces a range of loved snacks including Ferrero Rocher, Nutella, and one of my personal favorites- Kinder!
Ferrero Hanuta
We are sampling the Ferrero Hanuta, which is manufactured in Germany, and although owned by an Italian company is widely considered a German confectionery item.  The full name of the snack under review is the Hanuta Haselnuss – Schenitte.  Our German snack sampling comes in a pack of two and weighs in at 1.5 oz.  From our research it appears Ferrero offers a wide range of product sizes.  The wrapper of our Ferrero Haunta is shinny gold on the corners and has a wafer sandwich filled with chocolate and hazelnuts in the center.  The package is small and appears to be a single serving, although we have 3 reviewers on our taste test panel today.
Hanuta, which is an acronymic for Haselnusstafel, or German for Hazelnut Bar is delightful treat.  The snack is comprised of two toasted wheat flour wafers filled with a generous portion of sweet chocolate and chopped hazelnuts.  The wafers are firm and crunchy.  The wheat flour make up did produce an extra toasty hint and at first seemed overcooked.  The creamy sweet chocolate is just right and the nuts are subtle but add to the overall presentation.  Myself and our taste testers all agreed that if this snack was offered in the US that we would opt to buy it in the check out line of the grocery store.
Well all of our US followers know the Ferrero Hanuta is not offered for sale in the US, but will World of Snacks change that?  Yes!  At this time we do plan to offer the Hanuta as a part of our German snack selection when we launch our online snack store early next year.  If you are interested in this snack or would like to know when our snack shop launches be sure to leave your details to the right.  Keep on snacking!

Jin Jin Mango Coconut Jelly

10/16/2013

Comments

On our search to find the best snacks in the world and eventually offer them available for purchase with international shipping we have sampled a variety of unique items.   Our last snack review took us to the Philippines and we tasted a spicy chip known as Oishi Prawn Crackers.  Today we are investigation a sweet snack from Taiwan or officially the Republic of China (ROC).
Our Taiwanese snack comes from the Jin Jin brand, which from what we can determine is owned by Jellico Food Company.  Jellico intruded themselves nearly 20 years ago with fruit jelly, or mini fruit gels as they are best known.  In addition to mini fruit gels Jin Jin, also offers creamy ice bars.  Our review today is for the Jin Jin Mango Coconut Jelly snacks.
Jin Jin Mango Coconut Jelly
Jin Jin Fruit Gels
Our package of mini gels is yellow mango colored and heavily covered with what we assume is Chinese writing.  The English on this snack items is very limited, in fact we can only make out "Jin Jin" and "Mango Coconut Jelly".   There are also a few pictures of mangoes and a clear window where we can view the individually packaged snack items.  Let’s get one with the taste test!
To be honest I personally had no idea what to expect, fruit jelly in the United States is a fruit based preserve that goes well on toast.  My partner who is Asian is very familiar with this type of snack and immediately was taken back to her childhood.  In her country it was common for house-guests to arrive with a bag of fruit gels.  As strange as I initially thought the item was, once I tasted this snack from Taiwan I was very familiar with it.  Jin Jin Mango Coconut Jelly snacks are basically Jello with fruit, something very common in the US.  Although this snack resembles Jello pretty closely, I actually like it better.  The smaller portion and the unique flavor make it very tasty.
Will World of Snacks stock Jin Jin Mango Coconut Jelly when we launch our international snack store early next year?  We are pretty confident this snack will be a part of our normal inventory, although we are not 100% sure to classify this tasty treat as Taiwanese or Chinese.  If you’d like a special coupon and to be notified when our online snack store launches be sure to leave us your details.

Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy Flavor

10/13/2013

We are traveling the world in search of unique and original snack flavors from every country we can think of.  So far we have trekked 27 countries offering an array of delicious foreign snacks.  For our snack review this time we find ourselves back in the Philippines.
Last time we landed in the Philippines we reviewed the Choc Nut, a peanut milk chocolate snack that seems to be loved by many.  Our response to this Filipino snack is one of the highest of all snacks we have review thus far.  This international snack review is for Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy Flavor.
First Oishi Commercial
Oishi belongs to the parent company Linayway and got its start in post-war Manila, Philippines.   The name Linayway was chosen to reflect optimism and hope after the war.  Obviously it’s related to the translation for our English readers.  They initially repacked cornstarch and coffee.  With the influence of Japanese technology their first snacks where Oishi Prawn Crackers and Kirei Yummy Flakes.  Today they are a massive operation producing snack food and confectionery items throughout Asia with a strong presence in China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Our Philippine snack under review is Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy Flavor.  Our sample is a 2.12oz shinny red bag with a background image containing fire and red peppers.  The main image on the bag shows the product with some retro text and a whole prawn.   Now let’s get on to the taste test!
Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy Flavor
Buy Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy
Upon opening the bag you get a whiff of spice with fish undertones, something we are becoming familiar with crunchy Asian snacks.  Upon inspection they look like an American product known as Hot Fries.  The actually cracker would be referred to as a chip in the US or a crisp in the UK.  However the flavor does hint towards a cracker, so they may indeed be a cracker.  The flavor is zesty and the spice is powerful enough and lingers a while.  The crunchiness seems almost exaggerated and adds to the charm of the chip.  Overall we really enjoyed this snack.  My co-founder and Operations Manager was born in Burma (now Myanmar) and fondly remembers this snack, so she may be a little partial.  This is my first experience and I plan to stock this item in my house on a regular basis.

Well we know my household will stock Oishi Prawn Crackers Spicy Flavor but will this chip make the line-up for our normal inventory on World of Snacks when our international snack store launches?  Of course the answer is yes!  They are a delightful treat and even if the Philippines is not one of our first offered countries it will eventually be stocked in our online store.  If you’d like to stay up to date on our progress be sure to follow us on facebook!

Terry's Chocolate Orange

10/9/2013

World of Snacks is searching high and low for the very best snacks found anywhere in the world and we are highlighting our discoveries on our international snack blog. Later this year we will launch our online snack store and plan to offer many of these featured items available for purchase with shipping in the US and across the globe. We initially thought this chocolate treat was from Poland since it’s manufactured there, however our research has led us to classify this confectionery item as English, where the company originated. Being much of my childhood was spent abroad in England I didn’t find it hard to believe this was not a Polish snack, it was one of my favorites as a kid!
Terry's Chocolate Orange
Our featured snack, Terry’s Chocolate Orange is manufactured in Poland by Mondelez International. Mondelez is Europe’s largest chocolatier and biscuit maker, the second-largest maker of candy and coffee and the third largest producer of gum. Needless to say this snack company is a powerhouse offering a vast array of delicious snack foods. Mondelez International also owns Kraft and even though we are classifying this particular snack as English, Mondelez is a US based company employing over 100,000 workers around the world. The reason we are calling Terry’s Chocolate Orange English is Terry’s was initially founded in the UK in the 1920s and is still a favorite among British snack lovers. Oddly enough, this Polish manufactured snack is not available for sale in Poland.
View Snacks from England
The presentation of Terry’s Chocolate Orange definitely adds to the charm of this high-end treat. It comes is a shinny blue box with gold letters. The snack itself is the size of an orange and comes wrapped in gold foil. Upon unwrapping this chocolate orange you can tap it in the center and it splits into 20 individual orange wedges! We know it looks good, but how does Terry’s Chocolate Orange taste?
Chocolate Orange From England
Chocolate Orange Candy
Although this snack from England was one I enjoyed as a child, it has been a long time since I’ve indulged in one. To be honest, I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect, well other than chocolate and orange. After the first bite, my original experience with Terry’s came back vividly. The snack is fun to eat and consists of firm almost crunchy chocolate that is blended with orange oil. The orange flavor is smooth and not acidic like a real orange. The flavor compliments the chocolate but does not overwhelm the taste buds. All tasters really enjoyed this British candy although my preferences have changed over the years. I was happy to indulge on this decadent treat but I would say it’s no longer my favorite. I think sampling snacks from around the world has led to an increased pallet for snacks. I found the chocolate a hair waxy like a US candy bar and the sugar content to be a little too high. That being said, I’m just being picky. Terry’s Chocolate Orange is a fantastic international snack!
Will World of Snacks offer Terry’s Chocolate Orange as a part of our normal inventory when our snack store launches? All signs say yes, so if you are searching for this unique British snack you will be able to order here soon! If you’d like to be notified when our store opens be sure to leave your details to the right.

1/01/20014 UPDATE: Alan from the UK notified us that we actually reviewed the US version of this snack.  We did import it from the UK but sometimes we still get items made for the US market.  We will be sure to review the true snack from England in the near future.  - WorldofSnacks

Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat

10/1/2013

Halloween is a sweet snack lovers dream in the US and it takes place at the end of this month!  So we decided to start off October with a Halloween treat.  Our international snack blog has toured around the world in search of some exciting and unusual snacks and no country has excited us more so than Japan.  We are back in Japan tonight and we are sampling the Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat.

PJapanese Kit Kat
Blueberry Cheesecake Kit Kat
Japanese Kit Kats are like no other. They offer a wide variety of seasonal and limited production flavors.  We are hoping to try every flavor in production and offer Japanese Kit Kats for sale in the US and worldwide when we launch our international snack store.  So far we have tried Kit Kat Blueberry Cheesecake, Kit Kat Brown Sugar, and the Black Kit Kat known in Japan as Otona no Amasa.  Our special Halloween themed Kit Kat for this review is the Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat.
We are sampling a Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat that features Halloween themed colors as well as a ghost, jack-o-lantern, and a witch.  This rare Kit Kat flavor also comes with a cute Devil to stay true to the Halloween theme.  Although we have called this Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat we have also seen it referred to as the Pumpkin Vanilla Kit Kat.  Nestle also produced a Pumpkin Cheesecake flavor, but we are sure this is not it.  Being we are not fluent in Japanese we went with the flavor that seemed most acknowledged online.  Now on to the snack review.
Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat
Our most previous review of a Japanese Kit Kat was the Blueberry Cheesecake Flavor, something we are over the top about and truly love.  After sampling that snack we were unsure if we’d ever be able to enjoy another Kit Kat to that level.  Guess what?  We were wrong!  The Japanese Kit Kat Pumpkin Pudding Flavor is amazing, and most of our testers don’t even care for Pumpkins.  We have no idea why these delicious flavors are not offered in the US and we hope it stays that way (so we can make money).  The chocolate is smooth and creamy; the wafer is like all Kit Kats, crunchy and firm.  The filling and flavor between the wafers though is what truly sets it off.  The Pumpkin is subtle and accented by a hint of cinnamon.  The pudding, well it could be Pumpkin Vanilla because most basic pudding is vanilla to begin with, but it compliments the snack nicely.
Will World of Snacks offer the Pumpkin Pudding Kit Kat from Japan when we launch our international snack store at the end of the year?  We definitely hope so!  Now that we are getting closer to our launch date we are firming up our deals with our suppliers.  We are hoping to offer every single flavor of Kit Kat from Japan that we can get our hands on.   If you’d like to be notified when our online foreign snack store launches be sure to leave your details to the right or follow us on Facebook!
