Takis Guacamole by Barcel

World of Snacks has circled the globe in search of the best chips, cookies, and candies in the world.  Our international snack blog is a way for us to highlight our journey though foreign snacks as we try to determine which treats to stock in our online store set to open later this year.  Our featured snack for this article is from Mexico.  So far we have reviewed two sweet treats from south of the border, the Carlos V candy bar and the Emperador Cookies.  This week we are reviewing our first Mexican chip, Barcel’s Takis Guacamole.
Barcel’s is a snack company from Mexico who has set up shop in the US under the name Barcel USA.  Based out of Coppell, Texas this young consumer packaged good company is bringing exciting new flavors to the US.  Although our version of Takis Guacamole is produced for the US snack market it is still manufactured in Barcel’s Mexican factory.

Upon opening Takis Guacamole a jalapeno-like smell leaps from the bag.  The aroma is carried over into the flavor as only a non-spicy hint.  The creamy guacamole then takes over and is finished out by a powerful salty aftertaste.  The crunch is nice and the overall presentation tastes as if you rolled up a really salty Doritos and dipped it into guacamole, although this version is far less messy.  Initially our test panel consisted of three but after examining this Mexican chip our 10-year-old director of taste opted out of this sampling, which is very rare.  Both myself and the other tester enjoyed Takis Guacamole by Barcel but we both agreed the salt needed to be turned down to make this a regular in our household.
Will Takis Guacamole be a regular in our international snack store?  There is strong chance you will be able to buy this flavor and other Takis flavors and have them shipped anywhere in the world when we open.  However if the US distribution decreases the demand for this Mexican chip we will be quick to remove it from our inventory.

Hill Orange Cream Biscuits

Our vision for World of Snacks came about because of several factors. The first was my personal love of snacks from England.  The other factors included the desire to search out unusual and foreign snacks, develop an international business to educate my 10 year old son, learn more about the diverse cultures of the world through food, and of course to eventually make more money!  So far we are doing all of the above, except the money portion, but that is OK.  Later this year we will bring it all together when we launch our international snack store that will supply the entire world with the very best snacks from everywhere.  Now back to the first factor, my personal love of snacks from England.
Hill Biscuits Snack Pack
Our international snack review is for the Hill Orange Cream Biscuits.  Hill is a very old privately held company from England that initial started in 1855.  This snack company's founders John & Sarah Hill started their business in Dukinfied when they decided to create a bakery to compliment their general grocery store.  Things took off pretty fast from there.
The powerfully sweet orange cream filling is what brings it altogether.
Hill Orange Cream Biscuits
Our sample of Hill Orange Cream Biscuits came in a snack pack that includes six stay-fresh packs of six biscuits.  Generally we try to review the entire snack but being the Hill snack pack offers six individual flavors we decided to take our time and review them individually.  The different flavors are in the large shinny blue bag and are individually wrapped in simple clear packaging with the flavor stamped on top.  The first flavor we pulled from the pack, well you may have guessed it's the Hill Orange Cream Biscuits.
Although I spent many of my childhood years living in England I am a little upset I never encountered this particular flavor of Hill Biscuits.  They are phenomenal! The biscuit is crisp, thick, and subtle.  The powerfully sweet orange cream filling is what brings it altogether.  At first I personally thought the zesty cream was a little too sweet but I paired them with a hot cup of English tea and I was very pleased.  My son was the only other tester tonight and he agrees, the Hill Orange Cream Biscuits are amazing!  Now we have to pace ourselves before jumping to the other five flavors.
Will World of Snacks include Hill Orange Cream Biscuits as a part of our normal inventory when our foreign snack store launches?   This snacks is for sure going to be offered for sale in the US and all around the world.  If you'd like a personal invite to the launch of our online store be sure to leave your details to the right.  Keep on snacking!

Burdhouse Bakery Granola

World of Snacks it venturing around the globe  in search of inventory for our online international snack store that is set to launch towards the end of this year.  We have sampled sweet and salty treats from nearly every country we’ve encountered.  That being said, we have not spent nearly enough time looking at snacks from the US.  Another segment we have missed, healthy snacks!  We want to be thorough and do intend to offer US snacks for sale exported around the world, so let’s take a look at one right now!
Our healthy US snack under review is from a company called Burdhouse Bakery based out of Wyoming. This family owned bakery has been servicing businesses with baked items in their hometown for years.  Their range of snack products includes breads, muffins, cookies, and specialty items ranging from cake pops to scones.  In addition to being a wholesaler to lucky stores in Casper, Wyoming Burdhouse Bakery has ventured out to offer their fan favorite custom granola available for retail purchase via their website.
Burdhouse Bakery Granola
For our snack review of Burdhouse Bakery Granola we sampled two of their offerings.  The first is their ready to go Almond Mocha and the second, was a concoction of our own!  We chose caramel granola, peanuts, white chocolate chips, and dried banana.  We received our sample very quickly and our granola arrived packaged in brown envelope bags with a clear window.  The portion size was significant and I was relieved to see the retail bags were re-sealable.  The simplistic styling with just their logo above the clear window gave a mom & pop feel to the product which I personally appreciated.
The snack secretly won me over and out of a vast selection of snacks from around the world I found myself reaching for the Burdhouse Granola.
Picture
Our test group for this US based granola snack was wide and varied.  We had enough to actually make the tests in rounds.  The first round consisted of our normal testers:  I, my lovely lady, and our 10 year old director of taste.  The other 2 testers immediately fell in love with both versions of Burdhouse Bakery Granola.  I on the other hand had to warm up to it.  We sampled it straight from the bag and did not compliment the granola with anything else.  Something strange then happened.  I put a portion of our sample in our pantry and I found myself visiting the snack several times a day.  The snack secretly won me over and out of a vast selection of snacks from around the world I found myself reaching for the Burdhouse Granola.  I then paired it with milk and fell in love!  The next round of the taste test consisted of 6 men ranging in age 24-32.   All of the men involved in the taste test all scored this snack high marks.  The third and final round was all women ranging in age from 26-45 and agreed independently with the men.   What does that mean?  This is a fantastic healthy snack for people of all ages and genders!
Will World of Snacks offer Burdhouse Granola as a part of our normal inventory when our international snacks store launches?  Initially, we do not think so.  We are not sure if healthy snacks fit in with our product line.  We think healthy snacks could be an expansion in the future, but for now we are just focusing on junk food.  That being said, you can purchase this delicious treat directly from Burdhouse Bakery yourself.  If you’d like a special invite to the launch of our snack store be sure to leave your details to the right.  Keep on snacking!

Petit Herisson Cemoi - Little Higgy Chocolates

9/10/2013

Comments

Highlighting snacks from around the world, our international junk food blog is searching the globe for the very best sweet and salty treats.  We have traversed all across the world and have circled back to France.  The last and only snack we have sampled from France was the Eiffel Bon Bon's and we pretty much determined it was an imposter snack!  The Eiffel Bon Bon's are solely made for US consumption.  For this international snack review we wanted to make sure we had a genuine French treat.  So World of Snacks searched for something written in French!
Petit Herisson Cemoi
Our French snack is the Petit Herisson by Cemoi Chocolatier Francais.  This translates to Little Higgy!  Cemoi is a very old confectionery company that got it's start in 1814 when chocolate maker Jules Pares built the first chocolate factory in France.  This snack company is so old that they were among the first factories to use electricity in 1892, many years after their start.  Fast forward to the future and they now have a total of 22 factories with 14 still being in France.  Now we know a little about Cemoi, let's take a look at the Little Higgy aka Petit Herisson.
Picture

Little Higgy by Cemoi

This French snack definitely looks good.  It comes in a dark chocolate color plastic bag that is highlighted with a caramel color.  Pictured front and center appears to be a very tinny hedgehog eating a tempting chocolate snack.  The text on the front is in both French and English.  On the back there are several additional language making it apparent Cemoi produces for the international market.  Now we know how Little Higgy chocolate snacks look, let's see how they taste!

The Taste Test

Sweet!  Petit Herisson Cemoi is among one of the sweetest snacks we have discovered from around the world.  This French sugary snack is a fancy marshmallow that is coated with caramel and crispy milk chocolate.  I am sure this would be a hit with kids but unfortunately our test group was only adults for this review.  Typically international snacks are less sweet than American snacks, however this is not the case here.  Although the snack is packed full of sugar, we did enjoy it.  The gooey marshmallow surround by a crisp crunchy chocolate made for an enjoyable experience.  We believe in moderation the Petit Herrison or the Little Higgy is delicious, but once you've had a few you may move onto something else.
Will World of Snacks stock Little Higgy by Cemoi when we launch our store for snacks from around the world later this year?  So far our selection of French snacks is limited.  If we locate several more loved snacks from France than chances are we will indeed stock this snack.  If you'd like to stay up to date with our progress and be notified of our international snack store launch be sure to like us on facebook.

German Toffifee & US Toffifay by Storck

9/2/2013

Comments

On our search for the best snacks in the world, our international snack blog has traversed much of the globe.  One country World of Snacks has not focused enough on is Germany.  I personally traveled through out Germany and truly enjoyed many German snacks.  However, our snack today is not one and I am not sure how I missed such a loved German candy.
Toffifay by Storck

August Storck KG

Our snack from Germany is the Toffifee Hazelnut Cup by a company named Storck.  Originally started way back in 1903 by August Storck, the company was first known as Werther's Sugar Confectionery Factory.  With only three employes Storck set out to tackle the snack market in his hometown of Westphalia. Fast forward to today and this German Snack company is a powerhouse and owns many loved brands including Werther's Original, Merci, Risen, Mamba, and of course, Toffiee.  Toffifee by Storck was launched in 1973 and it's popularity quickly spread.  Today this caramel cup is loved by people of all ages in over 90 countries.

Storck Toffifay Candy

So avid snack enthusiasts and carefully readers may have noticed the image of our German snack is labeled Toffifay, and a majority of our snack review is referring to Toffifee.  No this is not a typo, although those do happen on a rare occasion.  This package is developed for the English speaking market.  We believe they made the text change so it's pronounced right although sounding them out individually we don't really notice much of a difference.  The packaging for Toffifay by Storck is a rigid cardboard open container that slides into a light weight casing.  When first open the thicker cardboard container features 15 tempting pieces sealed behind clear cellophane.  Overall the packaging and presentation was enjoyable and made excited to get onto the test.

Snack Review for Toffifay by Storck

Our taste test of Toffifay by Storck was a rare solo test.  We are currently adding another eCommerce business to our portfolio of websites so I found myself alone.  My time for traveling through out Europe and ultimately Germany was long ago.  I spent a little while trying to recall if I personally encountered Toffifay when in Germany.  Once the taste test started and I began to right this snack review, I quick realized that there is no way that I previous tasted this German treat.  The first thing that tipped me off was the presentation, you actually squeeze the hazelnut cup from the package.  The second clue for me to determine any previous interaction was the taste.  The Storck Toffifay is a delicious snack that I am pretty sure I'd recall.  Each cup is a whole hazelnut in chewy caramel with chocolate hazelnut filling and dark chocolate!  Storck took time to combine some very popular snack ingredient to create something that is truly delightful.  It's not too sweet and each ingredient holds it's own nicely.  I am very satisfied with this snack and wish I found it sooner.

Buying Toffifay in the US (and everywhere else)

Our reason for searching for the best snacks is to stock our international snacks store that is set to be launched toward the end of the year.  Will World of Snacks offer the German Toffifay or Toffifee as a part of our normal inventory.  Storck has a strong global distribution and we generally try and focus on hard to find snacks, that being said, we love this treat and will indeed offer it as a part of our normal German snack offering.
