Curly Wurly by Cadbury

5/30/2013

Comments

Welcome to our international snack blog.  Generally I create the blogs myself but our 10 year old Director of Taste headed up this one on his own.  I followed up with him and helped create the snack article but on occasion he will be the solo writer of a few snack reviews in the near future.  A child's perspective on treats is equally, if not more important than an adult connoisseur of international snacks.  I hope you agree.  Enjoy!

Today World of Snacks is taking a trip and once again stoping at the little island nation known as England. Last time we visited England we sampled Jamie Dodgers Original Biscuits, and today we are going to try the one and only, Curly Wurly by Cadbury. This English snack is a funny little snack, as it is an edible ladder of rich chocolate and chewy caramel, a perfect combination of snack components.
Cadbury Curly Wurly
This tasty treat we are currently reviewing for our international snack blog is made by the  well known company, Cadbury. Initially Cadbury was started when a guy named John Cadbury who in 1824 decided he would like to open a grocer's shop in Birmingham, UK. Later this initial candy shop grew and grew to become the famous Cadbury confectionary brand. One of the most popular treats of the company is the Cadbury Dairy Milk, which of course we will be reviewing in the future. Now lets take a look at the Cadbury Curly Wurly.
Picture
Jayden Olivarez - Director of Taste W.O.S.
This British snack comes in a rectangular shaped bar, a geometric shape that has something delicious inside. If you are wondering whats inside, I'll tell you, its a long stick of the chewiest caramel available drenched in silky milk chocolate. It almost looks like a long chocolate-covered pretzel. However, this is no ordinary pretzel, in fact it's not a pretzel at all!  Our sample group included myself, Jayden Olivarez and my father, the normal author of our snack blog.  This combination of flavor and texture was new to me but he mentioned that the carmel eluded to a candy he says is called a Sugar Daddy.  Simple research show me that the Sugar Daddy is missing one very critical component, the chocolate outside!  That means my "daddy" may not know what he is talking about.
Will World of Snacks carry the Curly Wurly by Cadbury?  Being we already have a very strong English following chances are this delicious treat will make the cut to be included in our normal inventory.

I hope you enjoyed my first blog, I did this one with my father's help but hope to become a solo contributor in the near future.  If you'd like to follow along with our progress and get a notification of the launch of our store be sure to submit your info to the right.

Galaxy Ripple Chocolate

World of Snacks is off to a new destination, the island of Ireland in the United Kingdom.  Well, at least we think that is where we are going.  We are reviewing the Galaxy Ripple, a candy bar that is discreetly owned by one of the world's leading food manufactures, Mars.
Galaxy Ripple
Mars Incorporated is the 3rd largest privately held company in the United States, and is entirely owned buy the Mars Family.  Galaxy, the company listed on the packaging is one of several products to hint to the Mars parent company by using an astronomical name.  So why do we think this US based company is producing an Irish Snack?  Well, the Galaxy Ripple is manufactured in Ireland.  To add to the confusion, the Ripple was initially debuted in England in the 1960s.  Mars later purchased the Ripple in 1986 and moved it's manufacturing facilities to Ireland.   Now that you are genuinely confused, let's get to the facts that everyone can understand.
Galaxy Ripple, a candy bar that is discreetly owned by one of the world's leading food manufactures, Mars.
Mars Candy
From the packaging of the ripple it was clear to see that this was something that will be flakey, and hopefully delicious.  The Galaxy Ripple comes in a long slender wrapper that is elegant and pictures the interior snack through the word "ripple" spelled out along the length of the package.   Although not a stunning presentation, you know even before opening the Ripple that you are in for something special.  So let's see how it tastes!

With my background growing up in England one of my all time favorite snacks is the Cadbury Flake, and the Galaxy Ripple appears to be along the same lines, just covered in an additional layer of smooth milk chocolate.  This candy bar has a flakey center, or as I imagine Mars prefers, a rippled center!  It's folded chocolate, encased in an outer layer of milk chocolate.  Being I am a big fan of Flake, I assumed I'd truly enjoy the Ripple.  The Galaxy Ripple hints to Cadbury's Flake, but is it's own unique experience.  While eating the snack I really enjoyed it, then an over-powering sweetness weighed in as a part of the after taste.  Overall I really liked this snack from Ireland, but being spoiled by the Flake I felt it was just too sweet.  Our other tasters did disagree though, they thought the sweetness was just right and raved about the candy bar.

Will World of Snacks include the Galaxy Ripple in the launch of our international snacks store that is slated later this year?  We hope that it will make the cut, but currently we are unsure if Ireland and Irish snacks will be included in the launch.  We may try and sneak the Ripple in as an English Snack, but the final decision is yet to be determined.  If you'd like to be notified of our official launch and receive a special discount be sure to submit your details to the right.

Dr Gerard Choco Cool

When we developed the concept of creating the world's first online international snack store we had a list of exciting snacks and countries we wanted to explore. To be honest, Poland was not on the list.  Our last visit to Poland we sampled the very delicious Milka Milkinis Candy Bar and the time before we reviewed the scrumptious Prince Polo Candy Bar.  With our third candy from Poland we are noticing a trend. Keep reading to see what this trend is.
Dr Gerard Choco Cool
Now let's take a look at Original Dr. Gerard Choco Cool Biscuits with Cream Filling and Chocolate.  Our sample is a rather large pack that contains 8 biscuits, or in the US, cookies.  The top of the package is clear allowing the appetizing snack to peek through.  The remainder of the package is a translucent red.  The cookies inside truly do look irresistible through the clear window.  They appear to be a graham cracker style biscuit with a three piece chocolate bar attached to the top.  Enough about how they look, let's sample this enticing snack from Poland.

Our test group for this snack review consisted of only adults all aged 25-31.  The size of the packaging allowed us to share them with a group of people to get a wide assessment of the snack.  The verdict was unanimous, and everyone truly enjoyed the Dr Gerard Choco Cool cookies.  Although the biscuit looked like a typical graham cracker, it had a much more elegant flavor.  They reminded me personally of the free cookies that airlines give on short flights in the US.  The chocolate was milky and smooth and inside was a semi-sweet cream, that we initially mistook as coconut.  The combination of all three elements together was truly delicious and presented well.  The Choco Cool biscuits hint to a beloved american snack known as smores, but in a refined fashion.

So what's is the trend we are seeing with Polish Snacks?  So far we have discovered that Poland is home to many delicious snack and is now one of our most sought after counties for snack.  The Dr. Gerard Choco Cool Biscuits are my personal new favorite snack and the Prince Polo, is my son's favorite snack.  Will World of Snacks offer Dr Gerard Choco Cool Biscuits when our international snack store launches later this year?  You bet we will!  To be notified when our sales site goes live and to receive a special discount we invite you to submit your information to the right.

Yan Yan Chocolate Cream Dip by Meiji

Get ready we are heading back to Asia for this week's international snack review.  Although we've traveled through flavors all across the Asian content and it's surrounding islands, this is our first visit to Singapore.  However, we are reviewing a snack that is manufactured in Singapore, by a company we already know is Japanese owned company.  So let's take a look at his Singaporean/Japanese snack.
Yan Yan Chocolate Cream Dip
Yan Yan by Meiji
Our international snack is manufactured by a company called Meiji.  One of our very first foreign snack articles was about Meiji's Hello Panda Biscuits, and now we are taking a look at another one of our favorites, Yan Yan Chocolate Cream Dip.  Meiji is a confectionary company as well as a pharmaceutical outfit, a strange mix for a snack brand, but as long as our treats taste good, they can sell anything else they want!

Although Yan Yan is from a country World of Snacks has yet to visit, our review panel is very familiar with the product.  In fact, this foreign snack food is one we have stocked in our household in the past.  With the diverse make up of our family, you can image we have an interesting pantry.  Yan Yan is loved by many Asian-Americans as well as many other cultures all across the globe. Yan Yan Chocolate Cream Dip comes in a reddish-orange cylinder and has a peel off top.  Once open, there is a compartment of chocolate suspended above and to the side of a container of stick looking cookies, or better known internationally as biscuits.  Each stick like biscuit features a fortune, making them entertaining and edible at the same time.

If you are taking time to read this review of Yan Yan Chocolate Cream Dip then chances are you are wondering what they taste like, or where you can purchase some of your own.  Don't worry, we will fill you in on both.  First off the taste is great!  The biscuit is only semi-sweet, and has a borderline cracker flavor and texture to it.  The chocolate dip is where the sweetness of this treat comes in, and for people who prefer a less intense sweetness, they'll enjoy the subtle sugar kick as well as the creamy chocolate.
Will World of Snacks offer Yan Yan Chocolate Cream by Meiji in our normal inventory?  We imagine so, being we are already fans of the snack.  When our international snack store launches later this year, we don't intended to offer a designated Singapore food section just yet, but you'll definitely find these in our selection of Japanese snacks.  If you'd like to be notified of our grand opening be sure to submit your details to the right of follow along on our Facebook page.

Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits

World of Snacks is heading for the land down under for the second time this year.  Of course, we are talking about Australia.  Last time we reviewed a snack from Australia we took a look at Darrell Lea Dark Chocolate Ginger Fudge Bars.  We also heard back from the folks who own Darrell and we think very highly of them.  Although this week's snack is not owned by Darrell, we are still just as excited to give it a try.
Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits
This snack attack is brought to you by Arnotts.  This long standing Australian snack company initially opened as a small bakery in 1865.  Arnott's first customers where local townspeople and crews from ships that where docked at a port nearby in Newcastle.  From humble beginning this snack company grew to employ thousands of workers from more than 40 countries worldwide.  Many Australians have grown up enjoying their delicious treats and the company is considered by many to be a part of Australia's history.  Now let's take a look at Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits!

These Australian Biscuits literally jumped off the shelf of our snack storage facility.  The package gleamed like a powerful cylinder waiting to be unleashed.  Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits come in a shinny wrapped package that appears to have melting chocolate, in the process of covering mint.  If you enjoy mint like we do (most of us), then you'll appreciate the aesthetics of the treat.  Even before you open the package you know what you are getting into.  Now, let's get into these Arnott's Mint Biscuits and get on with our international snack review.
World of Snacks Review
The Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits are an improved version of the Girl Scout Thin Mints.  The natural milk product adds an additional dynamic that makes it a cut above a normal mint biscuit.
The biscuits are the perfect Australian indulgence.  The cookies consist of a crunchy mint biscuit, milky cream and rich chocolate.  These minty delicacies are outrageously delicious and allude to a very popular American cookie.   If you think of the greatest American mint cookies, the first thing that comes to mind are Thin Mints, offered by the Girl Scouts.  If you do not live in the US, you may not realize how hard it is to come by Thin Mints, they are only offered by small children who go door to door to earn money to fund their organization.  The Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits are an improved version of the Girl Scout Thin Mints.  The natural milk product adds an additional dynamic that makes it a cut above a normal mint biscuit.  Not all of our snack testers are mint fans.  With this being said the mint is not overpowering and this snack was enjoyed by all.
Will World of Snacks offer Arnott Mint Slice Biscuits as a part of our normally stocked inventory?  We'd love to offer a new and improved version of Thin Mints to our American clientele along with the rest of the world.  The only thing potentially holding us back is the price.  What we neglected to mention is they start at $8 a pack, which is rather high for a single sleeve of cookies.  We really enjoy them so chances are they will be offered in limited runs when we feature Australia.  If you are interested in this snack or others be sure to submit your information to the right and we will send you a coupon and announcements once our international snack store launches later this year.

Brown Sugar Japanese Kit Kats

5/2/2013

World of Snacks is circling the globe sampling the very best treats from each country, and although we've stopped in Japan twice this year we are back and ready to look at another Japanese snack.  So far we covered many countries and it seems that the county we are most excited about is Japan.  This Asian country seems to have the biggest variety of unique and sometime unusual flavors of snacks from brands we are very familiar with in the United States.   There may be not better example than Kit Kat.
Brown Sugar Kit Kat
So far we have reviewed one other Kit Kat from Japan, and apparently there are only 198 more varieties to go.  Since the year 2000 Kit Kat has literally released 200 different flavors of Kit Kat in Japan, with many of them being limited editions.  Last time we took a look at the Black Kit Kat, better known as Otona no Amasa.  Today we are sampling the Brown Sugar Kit Kat, or more formally known as Tokyo Nihonhashi Kuromitsu.

With Kit Kat being a house hold name through out the world there is really no reason to dive into it's history like we generally do for our international snack reviews.  With so much mystery and anticipation we will jump right into our taste test of the Brown Sugar Kit Kat from Japan.
To be honest to put the flavor into words is very challenging.  We've never come in contact with Japense Brown Sugar Kit Kats or anything that taste's even remotely similar.
Tokyo Nihonhashi Kuromitsu Kit Kat
I have to omit when we choose the Japanese Brown Sugar Kit Kat for our snack review tonight, we had know idea what flavor we were sampling.  None of us can read Japanese!  That adds to the excitement and makes it challenging to determine exactly what we are sampling. Our test panel today consisted of three members, and none of them guessed the flavor to be brown sugar.   After doing some research it appears there are many types of brown sugar, and the flavor this Japanese Kit Kat was shooting for was not typical American brown sugar.  In fact the flavor was closer to a tapioca with a hint of fruit.  Well, that was one of the descriptions.  To be honest to put the flavor into words is very challenging.  We've never come in contact with Japense Brown Sugar Kit Kats or anything that taste's even remotely similar.  The white chocolate is rich and very sweet, and even though there is a hint of fruit, no one from our panel could determine which type of fruit.

Will you be able to buy the Brown Sugar Kit Kat and other Kit Kats from Japan on World of Snacks when our international snack store launches later this year?  You bet you will!  Even though we can't put the flavor of the Tokyo Nihonhashi Kuromitsu into words, you have to try this one for yourself!  Locating all the flavors and finding them at a reasonable price has been a task, but not worry World of Snacks will sell Japanese Kit Kats in the US and ship through out the world.  To be invited to the launch of our international snacks store be sure to leave your information to the right.
