Favorite Filipino Snacks

6/21/2016

Comments

A couple weeks ago we reviewed some of our favorite Thai snacks and they nearly all sold out right away.  Not to worry, we have more arriving tomorrow! However, we wanted to keep the series going and take a look at some of our Favorite Filipino Snacks that are offered for sale here in our international snack store.
Currently we offer 5 different categories of Filipino Snacks.  They include Filipino Nuts & Crackers, Candy, Chips, Noodles, and Cakes. To keep this article short we will highlight one of out best-sellers from each category.

Boy Bawang Cornick Hot Garlic

Boy Bawang Cornick Hot Garlic

Filipino Nuts & Crackers
We love garlic and as soon as you rip open the bag you are hit with a very pleasing garlic aroma.  Their highly addicting and the hint of spice from the include chili powder really brings it all together.  We offer Boy Bawang in a variety of flavors but hot garlic is hands-down our favorite.

Choc Nut Peanut Chocolate

Choc Nut Peanut Chocolate

Filipino Candy
We posted a review of Choc Nut over 3 years ago.  It was one of the first (if not the very first) snacks from the Philippines that we sampled. We've been hooked ever since. It's the perfect blend of chocolate and peanut and we love that it comes in little tinny bars.

Regent Golden Sweet Corn

Regent Golden Sweet Corn

Filipino Chips
This favorite Filipino Snack tastes like real sweet corn, but better! They have a fun cheese ball shape but there no cheese flavor - just the yummy flavor of wholesome corn.  Enjoy the crunch and order more than one bag, we promise you'll want more.

Lucky Me Pancit Canton Extra Hot Chili

Lucky Me Pancit Canton

Filipino Noodles
We couldn't fit "Extra Hot Chili" flavor above but that is why we (and our customers) love this Filipino Snack.  This is Filipino Chow Mein with large buttery noodles.  It could be a meal, but we call it a snack. Don't let the Ramen style packaging fool you, this isn't your average instant noodle.

Regent Mocca Cake

Regent Mocca Cake

Filipino Cakes
This our newest category of Filipino Snacks. We were ecstatic to get our hands on cakes from the Philippines and so were our customers.  We sold-out of our first shipment almost right away.  We have more arriving tomorrow, however we haven't even had a chance to try them yet!

These are just a few of our favorite Filipino Snacks.  Be sure to check out all the great Nuts & Crackers, Candy, Chips, Noodles, and Cakes that we offer from the Philippines. Also be sure to check back next week as we take a look at our favorite Korean Snacks!

Hawaiian Snacks

6/10/2016

Comments

Jokingly among friends we call Hawaii a different country. For those who are not well-versed in geography, Hawaii is an American state in the middle of the Central Pacific Ocean. Recently the aforementioned friends took a trip to this tropical state and returned with some goodies for us.  Although we are "World of Snacks" and typically we focus on snacks from around the world, Hawaii is physically around the world and we felt it would be a great fit!
Hawaiian Snacks
The not foreign but almost foreign gift appears to be one of the airport gift shop or hotel lobby variety. Which is completely cool with us - we love free snacks! It's a package that contains some dried mango, coffee, and chocolate cups.  It also has some shiny stuff in the bottom - we guess it's to make it more gift like.
Mango with Li Hing Powder

Mango with Li Hing Powder

Didn't notice the mango? Yeah, neither did we.  This giant package of dried mango from Lin's Market on Honolulu was hiding in the back and we were excited to find it. So we've had dried mango before, in fact we sell some pretty awesome dried mango here on our site. But we've never had Li Hing Powder. A quick Google search tells us that it's an acquired taste that is a blend of sweet, sour, and salty. I had a hard time distinguishing each, but the blend really accents the mango and over all this is a pretty awesome Hawaiian snack.
Royal Kona Coffee

Royal Kona Coffee

Coffee? That's not a snack. Sure it is. In fact we just added some pretty awesome coffee and tea from Thailand to our store.  Outside of World of Snacks we are coffee fanatics.  I start my day with a slow process ritual each morning of grinding my beans making my coffee (well, my partner makes me coffee - but it takes her a long time!). This coffee is made by a company called Royal Kona and it's their Mountain Roast Blend that comprises 10% Kona Coffee. Hawaiian coffee is a big deal.  It grows in volcanic soil with cool island breezes and gentle rains.  It smells awesome.  So how does it taste?  Ask me in the morning, it's too late for coffee - but I am really looking forward to trying this one.
Hawaiian Host Macnut Crunch

Hawaiian Host Macnut Crunch

Everyone loves chocolate, including us (we own a snack store - how could we not?).  So when we saw there was not one, but two packs of chocolate we got pretty excited!  The Hawaiian Host Macnut Crunch is jam packed with Macadamias and Crisp Rice. We are not kidding about it being "jammed packed."  Look above, you see what we are talking about.  It's a great candy and we suggest you hop on a plane to Hawaii now so you can try it for yourself.
Well there you have it. Thanks to our friends who brought us back a "sweet" gift. Do you have something you'd like us to review? Hit us up and we can review your snacks here on our blog. However, what we'd really like you to do is go buy a ton of snacks from our international snack store.  As always, keep on snacking world!

Favorite Thai Snacks

Here at World of Snacks we’ve sampled tasty treats from over 40 different countries.  We started out as a small family blog just a few years ago and now we are one of the largest companies selling snacks from all around the world. Generally we use our blog to feature taste tests as we explore new snacks to see if we think they’ll be a good fit for our international snack store. This has been a load of fun but we’ve kind of neglected writing about snacks we currently sell. So we’ve decided to dedicate the next few snack articles to yummy items we currently sell in our store here online. Today, we are starting off with snacks from Thailand.
Thai snacks have been great sellers for us and they tend to sell out fast.  Currently we offer a selection of Thai Chips, Candy, Noodles, Cookies and Cakes.  To keep things short we are going to feature one of our favorite Thai snacks from each category

Tao Kae Noi Seaweed Hot & Spicy

Thai Chips –
Tao Kae Noi Seaweed Hot & Spicy

A very unique snack, Tao Kae Noi Seaweed Hot & Spicy are perfectly fried seaweed strips with a spicy chili kick.  The texture is crisp and enjoyable. We sell several great flavors of Tao Kae Noi but this one is by far our favorite.

Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum

Thai Noodles –
Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum

Far superior to any Ramen noodles we’ve encountered here in the US, Mama noodles are simply phenomenal!  The Tom Yum flavor version is spicy with a bold citrus bite.  Adding a few ingredients turns this imported treat from a snack to a meal.  We carry several other Mama flavors so be sure to get your noodle on.

Euro Custard Cake

Thai Cookies and Cakes –
Euro Custard Cake

This is the Twinkies of Thailand.  It’s a moist coffee cake filled with creamy custard that is just sweet enough.  It’s a simple treat, nothing crazy, but very enjoyable.  We currently offer Euro cakes in several yummy flavors.  Try them all!

American Toddler Tries Japanese Chips

4/28/2016

Comments

Most of our taste tests here at World of Snacks are conducted by our immediate family.  However, we always like to invite others to join in on the fun.  We had our nephews over the other night and they wanted to try some of our unique snacks from around the world.  We thought it would be entertaining to film them sampling some Japanese Chips that Calbee was kind enough to send us.

Calbee Honey Butter Chips

Calbee Honey Butter Chips
So as you may have guessed, not all the chips smell and taste like vanilla.  What our nephew (aka the American Toddler) did get correct is the Calbee Honey Butter Chips do hint toward vanilla.  Our of the three Calbee chips from Japan this version was our favorite.

Calbee Jagabee Butter Soy Sauce

Picture
What's a Jagabee?  It's a thick, whole cut potato crisp.  It's like a blend of a french fry and potato chip.  The butter soy sauce makes it savory, and although it doesn't taste like chocolate, it's good!

Calbee Saya Wasabi Ranch Snow Pea Crisps

Calbee Saya Wasabi Ranch Snow Pea Crisps
Here's the wild card.  Wasabi peas and an American toddler?  How do you think he'll react.  Spoiler alert, he thinks they are spicy.  Well, we tested before handing them off to our nephew, and they are only a tad bit spicy.  However, the ranch flavor and the crunch of the pea make this a yummy snack.
Want to try these? Well you can't.  Not yet anyway.  We are testing them to consider adding them to our inventory.  We will most likely add them in the near future. Until them check out our massive selection of Japanese snacks for sale online.  As always, keep on snacking world!

Pickled Onion Crisps: Monster Munch vs Walkers

4/25/2016

Comments

What do pickled onions taste like?  If you do a quick search the only answer you will find is conveniently on answers.com - and they say they taste like apples.  Well, anyone who’s ever had a pickled onion or have sampled anything pickled onion flavor will tell you that’s definitely not the case!  Pickled onion flavor is very British, and not all that common here in the United States.
Walkers vs Mega Monster Munch
A few years back we posted our Mega Monster Munch Pickled Onion flavor review here on our snack blog.  Since then it’s been introduced to our store and has become a great seller, so much so that we don’t get to snack on them often - because they sell out.   Recently we started selling Walkers Pickled Onion Crisps.   They’ve been a hot seller too.  So we thought it would be worth comparing Mega Monster Munch Pickled Onion Crisps and the Walkers Pickled Onion Crisps.  So on to the review!
Picture
First up is the one we sampled long ago, the Mega Monster Munch Pickled Onion Flavor baked corn snack.  We already know we like them, but how do we describe how they taste?  Without heading back to our old post we ripped open a bag and gave them a shot.  They are intense and bursting with flavor. The have a distinct vinegar burst that mellows out during the after bite.  The onion is impactful, but not nearly as notable as the vinegar.  The shape is exaggerated and a tad bit silly, but fun nonetheless.  Overall, it’s an enjoyable snack from England.
Walkers Pickled Onion Crisps
Next up, our newcomer- Walkers Pickled Onion Crisps.  If we liked the previous snack, we have to like these?  Wrong!  They are completely different.  The crisps have a burnt tinge, which makes me think they are natural but still takes away from the flavor.  Also the onion is much more powerful and very noticeable.  If I had to guess, I would say this version tastes more like authentic pickled onions.
Bristish Mega Monster Munch
So who is the winner in our match up of pickled onion crisps?  Two out of three tasters preferred the Mega Monster Munch Picked Onion Crisps.  However, our youngest reviewer (a teenager) chose Walkers.  So ultimately, it’s up to you to figure it out.  Lucky for you (and us) we sell them both online here in the US with international shipping.  As always, keep on snacking world!

Whittakers L and P White Chocolate

4/2/2016

Comments

Over the past few years we've explored the best snacks from a total of 41 different countries.  Recently we have hit a slump with finding exciting snacks from countries we have yet to consider.  So when one of our followers wrote in and recommended we try snacks from New Zealand, we jumped at the opportunity.
He suggested we sample a few different snacks from New Zealand.  In fact, here is his exact list, - "pineapple lumps, burger rings, and Whittaker's chocolate (arguably the best chocolate I've had)."  He had us at chocolate!  Sure the other snacks sound yummy, but as a chocolate lover I knew we had to try Whittaker's.  So our first ever review from New Zealand is the Whittaker's L&P White Chocolate Bar.
Whittaker's L&P White Chocolate Bar
Most people have a love/hate relationship with white chocolate.  In retrospect, we should have started with something more traditional.  However, I personally love white chocolate. Not sure how I feel about L& P though, since it's a soda from New Zealand we have yet to try. For those who are unfamiliar with it (as we are) L & P stands for Lemon & Paeroa. When first developed it was a mix of lemon juice and mineral water, which we are pretty sure the original recipe has been altered since. Paeroa is the name of the city it was invented in. Enough about the soda, let's take a closer look at the chocolate bar.
Whittaker's Chocolate
Our sample of Whittaker's L&P White Chocolate Bar is substantial.  The 250g bar is big, large enough to share at a party.  The packaging is pleasant.  It feels high-end without being to pretentious.  The bar itself is wrapped in a gold foil.  Overall, we like what we see. But how does it taste?
Chocolate from New Zealand
When our chocolate bar arrived from New Zealand, we ripped it open and started to attack it.  We didn't bother reading the ingredients or did we realize exactly what L&P was. So at first, the crunchy bits inside the bar were tasty, yet a little unusual.  By the second piece I realized the crunchy bits inside were actually very similar to pop rocks.  The white chocolate was creamy and sweet, but not overpowering.  Overall the blend of the two really came together nicely.
White Chocolate
For the first round of the taste test we only had two testers.  I loved it, my partner thought it was just OK. Since we had so much of this massive chocolate bar left, we decided to expand our test group.  We offered a sample to five additional testers. All five enjoyed the Whittaker's L&P White Chocolate Bar.  One tester mentioned it would be best saved for special events or parties.  Only two of the five realized that the lemon crunch was similar to pop rocks.
Will World of Snacks offer this Whittaker's bar in our International snack store?  Maybe. We would need to located many more enjoyable snacks from New Zealand first.  So for now, you'll have to search elsewhere for this snack. As always, keep on snacking world!

Kit Kat Chocolatory

3/3/2016

Comments

A little over a week a go we posted a Kit Kat Sake Review and almost immediately we sold out of this unique flavor (not to worry - more are on the way).  Never heard of Sake Flavored Kit Kats? That's because it's a new flavor only offered in Japan.
Currently we stock nearly 20 flavors of Kit Kats from Japan in our international snack store and we offer them for sale here in the US with international shipping available.  We pride ourselves on our selection and really enjoy tracking down rare and exotic flavors. So when we found out there are even rarer Kit Kats then the crazy flavors we sell - we almost hit the roof with excitement!
Kit Kat Chocolatory
We discovered a Kit Kat boutique in Japan, known as Chocolatory. Well, 3 Kit Kat boutiques to be exact.  Over the years Nestle (they own Kit Kat) has offered hundreds of usual an innovative special edition flavors.  They don't sell them anywhere other than Japan. Some of these Japanese Kit Kat flavors are regional, but for the most part they are available throughout the country.  However, the Kit Kat Chocolatory offers flavors that can only be purchased at their boutique and no where else!
Well if you happen to own a store that specializes in hard to find snacks this is a big deal.  That means these rare Kit Kats are nearly impossible to find without heading to the store and picking up some yourself.  What makes it even harder is they only produce a limited number of bars each day, and when they sell out, you are out of luck.
Rarest Japanese Kit Kats
So you probably scrolled ahead to see these two flavors we scored from the Chocolatory. That's right, we are reviewing the rarest Kit Kats in the world on our snack blog!  Let's get on with our taste test of the special edition Butter Kit Kat and Chili & Passion Fruit Kit Kat.
Butter Kit Kat

Butter Kit Kat Review

Butter doesn't sound like a flavor that would enhance a chocolate bar.  Sure it's an ingredient, but the main flavor?  My younger brother used to sneak hands-full of butter when no one was looking.  Other than him, I do not know anyone who likes butter by itself.  So the idea of a butter Kit Kat doesn't sound appealing, but Nestle has yet to disappoint us with any of their Japanese Kit Kat flavors - so we are going in open minded. We are glad we did! This flavor is pretty amazing.  The butter flavor is nearly non-existent.  It's more of a heavy cream flavor.  It's rich, it's decadent, and it's so good.  This flavor is a result of a contest from the Tsuji Group culinary school in Japan. Great job guys!
Chili Passion Fruit Kit Kat

Chili & Passion Fruit Kit Kat Review

Now spice is a more appealing flavor for us. Both my parents have Latin American roots and my partner is from an Asian country that thinks everything should be spicy!  So needless to say, out of the two this is the rare Kit Kat we were looking forward to the most.  So what do we think of it?  The dark chocolate is the perfect right amount of bitter. The fruit is powerful, almost like a passion fruit jam. However the crisp wafer is a much better sensation than jam would be.  What about the chili?  Oh yeah, it's there and it comes in slowly with a long distinct burn.  This flavors is unusual and epic all at the same time.
So there you have it. Ready to buy a plane ticket to Japan and check out a Chocolatory?  We are and we will save you from needing a plane ticket.  In the very near future we will offer limited quantities of these outrageously rare Kit Kats for sale in our international snack store.  Until then check out some of the amazing flavors we currently offer.  As always, keep on snacking world!

Sake Flavor Kit Kats from Japan

2/23/2016

Comments

We love our Japanese Kit Kats and our loyal snack followers do to.  Any flavor we can get our hands on sells quickly, and rightly so - Japanese Kit Kats are ridiculously awesome.  The range of flavors offered is insane and wacky flavors like Wasabi Kit Kats are even delicious.  So when we heard Nestle was releasing Japanese Sake Kit Kats we knew we had to have them.
Sake Flavor Kit Kats from Japan
Of course as owners of a wildly successful international snack store we are going to tell you that everything we sell is good.  Well, that's not the case.  If we don't like something, we will let you know.  We know that everyone has their own preferences and snacks we hate - you may love.  So as we waited for the slow boat from Japan to get here with our Kit Kats we secretly hoped we would hate them.  You know, to maintain our credibility.
Japanese Sake Kit Kats
For those who hoped (like us) that the Japanese Kit Kat Sake Flavor would suck, we have some bad news.  Like the others, this foreign Kit Kat is awesome!  The white chocolate is mild and smooth and the sake flavor is spot on.  At first it's a little strange, sake doesn't typically have a chocolate-like look and feel or does it come filled with a crisp wafer.  But it quickly grows on you.  If you like sake, you are going to love the Japanese Sake Kit Kats!
Sake Kit Kat
Typically we review international snacks and then make a decision whether or not we will offer the particular snack for sale online in our store.  However, we knew the Japanese Sake Kit Kat would be well received so we already have it for sale online.  However, our supply is limited and it takes several weeks to get our inventory from Japan. So if you'd like to try this sake flavored Kit Kat you better order it now!  More fun flavors soon, so be sure to follow along on our blog!

Calbee Shrimp Chips (Video Review)

2/19/2016

Comments

Calbee Shrimps are a fairly new addition to our snacks store and have done tremendously well.  So when a rep from Calbee USA reached out to us directly and asked us to sample some of their snacks we jumped at the opportunity. We also thought this would be a great opportunity for our Director of Taste to make a snack review video and revive our Youtube channel.  This is something we plan to do much more of in the future.  It's a little rough since it's his first attempt at a solo video review but we think you'll enjoy it!
For the most part the rest of the World of Snacks team agrees with Jayden.  However, for those who prefer our classic approach to snack reviews we didn't want you to feel left out.

Calbee Shrimp Chips Original

Calbee Shrimp Chips Original
This is the prefect shrimp chip.  It's mildly flavored with the perfect amount of shrimp.  The crunch is massively addicting and the more you eat the more prevalent the flavor becomes.

Calbee Shrimp Chips Hot Garlic

Calbee Shrimp Chips Hot Garlic
Although it's hard to compare to the classic, this version is very tasty.  It's definitely one of my personal favorites.  I do agree with Jayden.  It's not hot, but it does have a nice garlic tinge to it.

Calbee Shrimp Chips Wasabi

Calbee Shrimp Chips Wasabi
Jayden was clearly exaggerating here. There is a slow wasabi burn, but it's not too hot by any means.  If anything, I wish it had a little more heat.  However, it's very enjoyable the way it is.

Calbee Shrimp Chips Yuzu and Black Pepper

Picture
This is currently the only flavor of Calbee Chips from our review that we do not stock in our international snack store.  So I too do not know what yuzu is.  However, my partner looked it up and said it is a citrus fruit.  I agree with Jayden in his video review.  It pretty much taste like a salt and pepper chips.  There is a little heat from the pepper but I did not pick up anything that would lead me to believe there was any yuzu flavor.  However, I really did like this chip and in the near future we will be sure to add it to our inventory.
* Update - We do offer this snack for sale now!

Well we hope you enjoyed our video review.  We promise they will get better as we progress.  So now that we have your hungry - check out our awesome selection of Japanese Snacks.

Honey Roasted, Carolina BBQ, Sriracha Peanuts

2/8/2016

Comments

Tonight we are snacking on some gourmet peanuts from right here in the United States.  To be precise, our nuts came to us from Rogers Brothers Farms in Hartsville, South Carolina. A multi-generational farming family, they currently produce cotton, corn, wheat, soybeans, and of course - peanuts!
Peanuts are a major ingredient in many of the snacks from around the world we sell today.  In fact, four out of the top 10 American Candy Bars contain peanut or peanut butter.  However peanuts by themselves are not something we stock much of. So when Rogers Brothers Farms reached out to us and asked us to sample some of their nuts we jumped at the opportunity!
Gillespie's Peanuts
If you have a keen eye you may have noticed the cans are labeled Gillespie's Peanuts.  Not to worry, the enterprising brothers named their line of gourmet nuts after their grandfather, R.P. Gillespie.  So let's get onto the taste test.  As you may have guessed from the title of this post, we are sampling 3 different flavors: Honey Roasted, Carolina BBQ, and Sriracha Peanuts.
Gillespie's Peanuts Honey Roasted
We started off strong with Gillespie's Peanuts Honey Roasted.   If you've ever snacked on peanuts chances are you've sampled nuts of the honey roasted variety.  Typically our international snack blog focuses on wild and crazy flavors, so we didn't expect much from a honey roasted peanut.  We could not be more wrong!  We discovered the perfect Honey Roasted Peanut.  Roasted in sweet honey and just lightly salted, this sweet treat really impressed us.  The honey coating emulsified and created the ideal crunch and we could not get enough of the real honey flavor.  Our youngest taster practically ran away with the can!
Gillespie's Peanuts Carolina BBQ
Next up was the Gillespie's Peanuts Carolina BBQ.  We take BBQ pretty serious so we were excited to pop open this can.  Unlike the Honey Roasted, the Carolina BBQ flavoring was much more subtle.  It made for an enjoyable snack that put the high-quality US grown peanut at the forefront.  However, I found myself hoping for more flavor and the other tasters agreed.  We could seek out little morals of tasty BBQ goodness but the flavoring was not even distributed.
Gillespie's Peanuts Sriracha
Last but not least - Gillespie's Peanuts Sriracha! We love Sriracha and even offer Sriracha Peas from Thailand in our store.  At first it seemed this gourmet peanut flavor was subtle like the Carolina BBQ, however a slow spicy burn crept on us.  The more we ate, the more we loved it.  Although the Honey Roasted Peanuts are our favorite we still really enjoyed this spicy version.
Will we stock Gillespie's Gourmet Peanuts in our International Snack Store?  Unfortunately we will not.  They don't really fit our target audience but we really did enjoy them and are glad the folks from Rogers Brothers Farms took time to send them.  Craving peanuts?  Check them out here. Looking for other foreign and exotic flavors? Check our our selection of snacks from around the world.  As always - keep on snacking world!
