Wicklein Brown Gingerbread (Lebkuchen)

At World of Snacks we are getting ready to expand our international snack store to include snacks from Germany.  Each month this year we are adding a new country and their best cookies, cakes, chocolates, and candies to our inventory.  So far this year we’ve launched our British Snack Shop and our American Snack Store.  Although most of our German Snacks are on the way to our Florida headquarters we are still searching for additional items to include in our selection of German Snacks online.

The snack we are reviewing today is Wicklein Brown Gingerbread (Lebkuchen).  Wicklein is the oldest snack company we have encountered from anywhere in the world, they have traced their origins as far back as 1615! This German snack company has seen a lot change over the years, and even had to rebuild their factories after World War II.  One thing has remained the same through out their expanded history; they’ve always made gingerbread! So lets take a look at Wicklen’s Lebkuchen.

From our research and this festive packaging, we have been able to deduce that this is a German Christmas snack.  Very fitting, since it is gingerbread- or is it?  Although Leckuchen is similar to gingerbread, it’s actually subtly different, and very old as well.  German monks invented this snack back in the 13th century!  Well, we hope our sample is a little fresher.  Overall the packaging is fun, it depicts a traditional German home and includes images of children playing in the snow, a snow covered Christmas-like tree, and a snowman.  Now we are in the holiday spirit, let’s give these heart-shaped cookies a taste.

Wicklein Brown Gingerbread (Lebkuchen) is chocolate and sprinkle covered gingerbread-like cookies or cakes.  Prior to opening the clear wrapping I personally thought they were going to be actual chocolate covered cookies.  Upon sampling the Wicklein Gingerbread I discovered they are softer, and more like a cake.  Although they are similar to a cake, they still are not quite a true gingerbread cake.  Our 11-year-old director of taste helped us put the cookie vs cake saga to bed.  He mentioned they are more like a light doughnut.  The consistency was unique, as was the taste.  It was a subtle gingerbread and the chocolate was a thin as possible.  Overall, we all enjoyed the treat and could see enjoying these around the holiday with some eggnog!
